Most filters just transfer specific messages -- such as those from a mailing list -- into a particular mailbox. A good set of filters can also help you get rid of spam (see 'Stop Spam!' Secrets, August 2002). All of the programs we looked at can move mail into specific mailboxes.

The subsystem in macOS is in charge of managing the file system, which includes the Unix layer.
